Sushant Singh Rajput (1986-2020) is the first person of Indian nationality to be honored as a Laureate, receiving recognition for his accomplishments in theatre and motion picture arts.
Rajput – whose millions of fans worldwide refer to themselves as SSRians – was far from simply an actor. His pursuits extended to computer science, physics, aeronautics, artificial intelligence, spirituality, as well as sports, dance, writing and charitable works – his curiosity for the human experience was limitless.
In 2025, on the 39th anniversary of his birth, he was posthumously awarded his Laureate Degree honoris causa in Dramatic Arts, officially becoming Laureate Sushant Singh Rajput, L.DA.

He famously acquired a Meade LX600 telescope, allowing him to observe celestial bodies with high precision, and purchased a piece of land on the far side of the Moon — more as a symbolic gesture of his affinity for the cosmos than a material acquisition. Additionally, he trained at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in preparation for a planned role as an astronaut, further demonstrating his commitment to bridging scientific inquiry with artistic expression, although he also expressed interest in taking part in a future Lunar mission with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
